Have you ever noticed why Jesus did not hand out silver coins to those in need? Yes, He fed thousands of people, but it’s only for a day not for the year or, lifetime. Instead, He taught people to trust the Provider not the provision.
When Israel came out of Egypt, they were hungry in the wilderness. God could have given them permanent storehouses of food. He could have dropped enough grain for a lifetime. But instead, He gave manna—daily bread, only enough for one day.
Exodus 16:4 says:
“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not.’”
Why daily? Why not for the whole month so that people to store it? The reason for this is big deal in God’s cycle of provision. Remember this, “God was training their hearts to trust Him, not the supply.”
When Jesus came, He did not start a bank for the poor or distribute coins to the crowds. Instead, He gave what mirrored the manna:
This wasn’t random—it was the same principle of daily dependence: “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11).
When Jesus Himself was tested in the wilderness, He declared:
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4, quoting Deuteronomy 8:3).
This was the lesson of the manna: physical food sustains the body, but God’s Word sustains life. Jesus, the Living Word, came to give people more than money or bread—He came to give eternal life far beyond what food can provide. This is His focus—eternity.
The miracle of the manna taught them to walk with God daily, not just to receive help from Him once. The same is true for us—if God gave us everything all at once, our hearts would quickly forget Him. It is about dependence on God, not independence.
Father, thank You for teaching us daily trust. Forgive us for the times we wanted lifelong guarantees instead of daily dependence. Teach us to live not on bread alone, but on every word that comes from Your mouth. Just as You gave manna in the wilderness, thank you for giving us our daily bread today—both physically and spiritually. Help us to trust in You as our true Provider. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
