Guidelines When Stress, Anxiety, and Exhaustion Set In

“Stress grows heavier the longer we hold it”

By Bishop Jerry Pena, God’s anointed servant

Stress, anxiety, and exhaustion are some of the fiercest battles many believers face today. These pressures affect not only our emotions but also our spiritual walk, our relationships, and our effectiveness in God’s kingdom. The good news is that the Bible is not silent on these struggles. God has given us clear guidelines to overcome—not just to survive, but to walk in His peace and strength.

  1. Cast Your Burdens on the Lord

Scripture: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

Stress grows heavier the longer we hold it. Many of us try to carry loads we were never created to bear—worrying about finances, our children, our health, or the future. But the Lord reminds us that He is the burden-bearer.

When you cast your burdens, it is an intentional act. Think of a fisherman casting a net into the sea—he doesn’t keep holding it in his hand. He lets it go. That’s what God is asking us to do with our stress.

Practical Step: Write down what is stressing you on a piece of paper. Then, pray over it and say: “Lord, I release this to You.” Tear the paper and throw it away as a symbol that you will not take it back.

  1. Renew Your Mind With God’s Word

Scripture: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6–7)

Anxiety feeds on imagination. Our minds run wild with worst-case scenarios. But the Word of God is like an anchor—it steadies us when life’s waves try to toss us around.

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness (Matthew 4), He didn’t reason with the enemy; He responded with the Word: “It is written.” We must do the same. Every anxious thought must be replaced with God’s truth.

Practical Step: Find 2–3 scriptures that speak directly to your area of stress. For example:

  • When anxious about provision: “My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).
  • When fearful: “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

Repeat them daily until faith rises and peace replaces worry.

  1. Find Rest in His Presence

Scripture: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Exhaustion is not only physical—it can be emotional and spiritual. We live in a world that glorifies busyness, but Jesus invites us to slow down and rest in Him. This is not laziness; it’s restoration.

Moses understood this when he said, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here” (Exodus 33:15). He knew that one moment in God’s presence brings more strength than days of striving in our own effort.

Practical Step: Schedule time daily, even if just 10 minutes, to sit quietly with the Lord. Worship softly, read a Psalm, and breathe deeply. Allow His Spirit to refresh you.

  1. Guard Your Heart From Overload

Scripture: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)

Many of us are exhausted not because of what God has given us, but because of what we’ve taken on outside His will. The enemy loves to distract us with too many responsibilities, draining us until we can no longer hear God clearly.

Jesus Himself set boundaries. He often withdrew from the crowds to pray (Luke 5:16). If the Son of God needed to say “no” at times, so must we.

Practical Step: Make a list of all your commitments. Ask the Holy Spirit: “Which of these are from You, and which are man-made burdens?” Be willing to step back from what is unnecessary so you can give your best to what truly matters.

“Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10)
  1. Lean on the Support of Others

Scripture: “Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10)

Isolation is one of the enemy’s greatest strategies. He knows that when you are alone in your stress, your thoughts will spiral downward. But when you share with a trusted believer, you gain perspective, strength, and accountability.

Even Jesus surrounded Himself with disciples. Paul always traveled with companions. We are not designed to walk through stress and exhaustion alone.

Practical Step: Call a prayer partner or a trusted mentor and be honest about your struggles. Don’t carry the weight alone—allow someone to help lift your arms like Aaron and Hur did for Moses (Exodus 17:12).

DAILY DECLARATION

Speak these aloud each morning and evening for the next 7 days:

  • “I cast my cares on the Lord, for He cares for me.”
  • “The peace of God guards my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus.”
  • “I will not live exhausted; I will live refreshed in God’s presence.”
  • “I guard my heart from overload and walk only in God’s assignments.”
  • “I am not alone. God is with me, and He has surrounded me with support.”
Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I thank You that You care for me. I cast every burden, every anxiety, and every weight at Your feet. Fill me with Your peace that surpasses understanding. Teach me to rest in Your presence and to guard my heart from overload. Surround me with faithful brothers and sisters who will strengthen me in prayer and encouragement. Today I choose Your Word over my worries, Your peace over my panic, and Your strength over my exhaustion. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

I know that my Jesus lives. He promise to never leave me or forsake me. Amen!

Chapter 6: The Theology of Prayer — The Heaven Built System

When we examine the biblical evidence collectively, a clear theology of prayer emerges. Prayer is not an add-on feature for religious people. It is the operating system of the Kingdom of God. Every major movement of God in Scripture was preceded by, accompanied by, or released through prayer.

Chapter 1: Jesus — The Praying Son of God

Jesus did not choose His twelve apostles through a committee meeting. He did not take a vote. He did not consult earthly advisors. He spent the entire night in prayer before making the most significant leadership decision of His earthly ministry.
“In those days Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God
