Reasons why your soul rejects the Word
By Bishop Jerry Pena, God’s anointed servant
“Why would God’s people reject knowledge?”
If knowledge leads to life and victory, why would anyone turn away from it?
Below are several biblical and practical reasons why God’s people might reject knowledge, even when it is freely available:
- Pride and Self-Reliance
Many reject knowledge because they think they already know enough.
“Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked…”— Revelation 3:17
Spiritual pride blinds people from their need to grow. They rely on their own opinions, experiences, or past victories instead of humbly receiving God’s truth daily.
- Rebellion and Stubbornness
Some people don’t reject knowledge out of ignorance but out of defiance. They simply don’t want to obey what God says.
“But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.”— Zechariah 7:11
The truth often confronts sin, selfishness, and hidden idols. People reject it because they don’t want to change.
- Love for the World
Many believers are so consumed by worldly pursuits that they have no appetite for God’s Word.
“For Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world…”— 2 Timothy 4:10
Knowledge of God requires time, focus, and sacrifice—things many are unwilling to give up for the sake of spiritual growth.
- Lack of Spiritual Hunger
Some reject knowledge because they’ve become spiritually dull and apathetic. They don’t see the value of truth.
“The days are coming… when I will send a famine… not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.”— Amos 8:11
Spiritual appetite can die when people are filled with everything but God.
- Influence of False Teachers
The rise of false doctrines, motivational preaching, and feel-good messages has made people comfortable in deception.
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.”— 2 Timothy 4:3
People reject truth because they prefer what sounds good over what is good.
- Fear of Accountability
Knowing the truth brings responsibility. When people learn what God requires, they can no longer claim ignorance.
“To whom much is given, from him much will be required…”— Luke 12:48
Some reject knowledge because they fear the commitment it demands.
- Carnal Mindset
A carnal mind resists spiritual truth. It’s hostile to God’s ways.
“The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God… they are foolishness to him.”— 1 Corinthians 2:14
Without the renewing of the mind by the Holy Spirit, the truth feels uncomfortable, foolish, or even offensive.
- Contentment with Religion, Not Relationship
People reject truth because they prefer what sounds good over what is good.
Many are satisfied with rituals—church attendance, songs, and titles—but avoid deep spiritual truths that lead to transformation.
“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.”— Matthew 15:8
Religion without knowledge of God creates a dangerous illusion of closeness with Him.
In Summary:
God’s people reject knowledge because of:
- Pride
- Rebellion
- Worldliness
- Apathy
- Deception
- Fear
- Carnality
- Religious comfort
But the result is always the same: destruction.
💡 The remedy?
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7).
We must humble ourselves, hunger for truth, and walk in obedience. Beginning today, may your soul delight in God’s holy Word. Amen
